Where your money sits, and how it reaches your wallet

What a settlement contract is, what a distribution is, and how money reaches you.

Your money arrives in your settlement contract, and is paid out from there to your own payout wallet — that payout is what we call a distribution.

Those two words appear across your dashboard — on your balance, on your payments, and on the notices that tell you a change is not live yet. Here is what each one means.

Settlement contract

Your settlement contract is the address on the public blockchain that your payments arrive at. Every payment on your account arrives there, and it holds the money until it pays out. It also fixes how each payment is divided between your own payout wallet and the Zoyn fee. That division is set when the contract is created and cannot be edited afterwards, which is why changing a detail like your payout wallet or your agreed rate means Zoyn has to replace the contract rather than edit it.

Distribution

A distribution is a payout from your settlement contract. It pays every wallet named in the contract the share the contract fixes for it, so your own payout wallet receives your share. Until one happens, the money sits in the contract — it is yours, and it is on the public record, but it has not reached your wallet yet. Your settlement contract is public, so a distribution can be triggered from any wallet, including your own. Zoyn triggers distributions on your contract too.

Where you will see them

  • Home and Money show what your settlement contract is holding, and how much of that is yours on the next payout.
  • A payment marked Completed has arrived in your settlement contract. It has not reached your own wallet yet — the payout is the step that does that.
  • If a detail on your account changes, a notice tells you your settlement contract has not caught up with it yet, because it cannot be edited once created.

Zoyn is software. It is not a bank, a payment processor, a payment gateway, a money transmitter or a money services business. Zoyn is never the seller in a sale (the "merchant of record"). Zoyn never holds a shop's money, and does not decide how long a payment company may hold it. When a customer pays by card or bank, the payment company handles that payment under its own terms and may hold it for a short time. The money then goes to the shop's own payment contract once the payment network has confirmed it.

Businesses can be based in 64 jurisdictions. A US state stays open when at least one checkout partner still serves buyers there. Customers can pay from 130+ countries through the checkout providers we connect to; which countries customers can pay from is set by those providers, not by Zoyn, and may change without notice. Not available in sanctioned jurisdictions: Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, and the Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.
